The Nigeria Cassava Growers’ Association (NCGA) was established through the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government, Research Institutions, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), National Seeds Service, and National Root Crops Research Institute. Its inception was inaugurated with great ceremony.

In 1987, the Nigeria Cassava Growers’ Association (NCGA) was established through collaborative efforts by various entities, including the Federal Government, Research Institutions, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), National Seeds Service, and National Root Crops Research Institute. The NCGA serves as an umbrella organization for cassava cultivators involved in production, processing, and marketing, as well as combating pests like cassava Mealbug (CM) and cassava Green Mite (CGM).

The NCGA has a wide membership that spans all senatorial districts of the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the 774 Local Government areas in Nigeria. Cooperative societies are formed at the ward, Local Government, state, and national levels, and are registered with state Ministries of Trade & Industries and cooperatives.

The Nigeria Cassava Growers Association is currently the leading organization of its kind globally, with 5 million registered members and more farmers awaiting registration. Nigeria is currently the top producer of cassava worldwide.

The current National President of NCGA is Chief Tola Adepomola, residing at 10 Textile/Iyin Road in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Before the establishment of NCGA in 1987, countries like Brazil and Malaysia were the leading exporters of cassava products, accounting for 70 percent of global shipments. Currently, Nigeria only exports 10 percent of its cassava production, with the remaining 90 percent consumed domestically. However, Nigeria is the top global producer of cassava.

Prior to the inauguration of NCGA, Nigeria was the fifth top producer of cassava, lagging behind Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. However, with the establishment of NCGA and the involvement of IFAD and IITA, Nigeria became the leading global producer of cassava starting in 1991.
